A surge in hotel construction will put more than 700 new guest rooms in Brevard County by the summer of 2018.
That would be a 7.9 percent increase in the county’s current hotel capacity, which now totals 8,846 rooms.
Six hotel developments in Brevard have entered in the construction phase. They include a Holiday Inn Express & Suites in West Melbourne, a Springhill Suites by Marriott in Cape Canaveral and a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Viera.
The other hotels under construction include a TownPlace Suites by Marriott in Titusville, a Hampton Inn in Melbourne and a Woodspring Suites in West Melbourne.
Eric Garvey, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism, told Florida Today that several factors have encouraged hotel development in Brevard.
Garvey cited a growing number of cruise-line passengers at Port Canaveral, business travelers with ties to Brevard’s space-flight industry, and visitors drawn by the Space Coast Stadium complex in Viera, the new home of the U.S. Specialty Sports Association. [Florida Today] – Mike Seemuth
