Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road will get anti-terrorism barriers following the latest vehicle-ramming attack in Europe.

Temporary concrete barriers will be installed along the curb line on the Alton Road and Washington Avenue entrances to the popular pedestrian mall, according to the Miami Herald. Mayor Phillip Levine said the barricades will be temporary “until a more permanent and aesthetically pleasing option” can be implemented as part of the street’s redesign.

The city is looking at the vulnerability of Miami Beach’s pedestrian-heavy areas following last week’s attack in Barcelona, when a van killed 13 and injured more than 100 people in a crowded Las Ramblas street. Three similar attacks in London caused multiple deaths this year alone.

Retailers along Lincoln Road rely on the street’s heavy foot traffic. Big-ticket sales include the $283 million sale of 1111 Lincoln in July and the $370 million sale of an entire block in 2015.

The city is also planning a multimillion-dollar streetscape project that’s being designed by James Corner Field Operations. [Miami Herald] – Katherine Kallergis
