The Related Group has submitted a proposal to demolish the residential building above downtown Miami’s Olympia Theater.

The current residential structure is 10 stories tall and features 80 residential units. Related is proposing to replicate the building and add about 220 affordable units, according to the Next Miami.

Miami commissioners were scheduled to review the proposal last week, but the meeting was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

Related’s plans are to renovate but not demolish the historic 1,567-seat theater.

The National Register of Historic Places gave the Olympia Theater a historic designation in 1984 after the Moorish style hall underwent extensive renovations in the 1970s.

The Olympia, designed by John Eberson, opened as a silent movie hall in 1926 and has offered its stage to stars including Elvis Presley and Etta James. The Olympia is one of several Miami theaters with a historic designation, along with Overtown’s Lyric Theater, which reopened after renovations in 2014 and Coconut Grove’s Ace Theater, which received its historic designation last year.
