The organization behind Art Basel agreed to hold the annual art fair from 2019 to 2023 at the Miami Beach Convention Center after the city agreed to install a new elevator and escalator there.

The Art Basel organization also took an option to hold the art fair in Miami Beach from 2024 to 2028. The fair has been held in Miami Beach since 2002.

Art Basel is scheduled to be staged at the Miami Beach Convention Center Dec. 7-10.

The Art Basel organization decided to hold the art fair at the convention center for at least five more years after Miami Beach agreed to pay $2.8 million for a new elevator and escalator at the convention center.

The elevator will connect the exhibition halls on the ground floor to a new ballroom on the second floor of the convention center. The center is undergoing a $615 million expansion.

Expansion work at the convention center will continue during Art Basel in December, and the city has ensured that all four exhibition halls will remain open during the fair. [Miami Herald]Mike Seemuth
