GL Homes withdraws controversial proposal in western PBC

The developer wants to build 2,420 homes on protected farm land

GL Homes withdrew its proposal to build thousands of homes on Palm Beach County’s Agricultural Reserve amid increasing opposition from environmental and neighborhood groups.

A day before a public hearing on the project, GL Homes vice president Kevin Ratterree told county officials it needs more time to garner community support for its plans, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The developer wants to build 2,420 homes on a 22,000-acre protected farming parcel west of Delray Beach and Boynton Beach. If approved, GL would build fewer homes on farmland in Loxahatchee, where it’s planning a single-family home community called Indian Trails Grove. That would cut 2,420 from its original 3,897 home count.

Property records show the developer also just closed on a $103 million mortgage from Bank of America for about 300 acres of land it owns through under Boca Raton Associates VII LLLP. The land is also part of the county’s Agricultural Reserve.
