Home builder Toll Brothers won city approval to build 201 townhouses on a closed golf course at Century Village in Deerfield Beach.
The Deerfield Beach City Commission approved the development Tuesday in a unanimous vote.
Toll Brothers now will ask Broward County to approve its proposal to change the land-use designation for the golf course to residential from recreational.
Toll Brothers would build townhouses on 23 acres at the 83-acre golf course, which has been closed for four years. The other 60 acres would become a park at the Century Village retirement community in Deerfield Beach.
Toll Brothers would not restrict the ages of people who buy units in the townhouse development, which would be separated from Century Village by a wall and would have its own entrance on Goolsby Boulevard.
According to city commissioner Todd Drosky, the townhouse development and a residential redevelopment of the Crystal Lake Golf Club will provide the first new housing in Deerfield Beach in 25 years. [Sun-Sentinel] Mike Seemuth
