A Sears department store in Boca Raton is one of 39 nationwide that will close within three months.
It is the only Sears store in South Florida on a list of the 39 stores released by Sears Holding Corp. that will close by early April.
Seritage Growth Properties owns many Sears stores, including the one that will close at the Town Center shopping mall at 6000 Glades Road in Boca Raton.
In a company statement, Seritage said without elaboration that it plans to redevelop the 19-acre site of the Sears store in Boca Raton.
Sears Holding recently sold its Sears store at the Pompano Citi Centre in Pompano Beach for $11.75 million but will continue to operate the store.
Along with 39 Sears stores, Sears Holding plans to close 64 Kmart stores by early April, including three in Florida, one each in Belleview, Clermont and Ocala.
Sears is struggling to compete with Amazon and other online competitors, as is Macy’s, which just announced plans to shutter its stores in downtown Miami, Gainesville and nine other locations across the country. [Sun-Sentinel]— Mike Seemuth
