A Tampa-area company acquired a 74-year-old motel and landmark in downtown Naples for possible redevelopment.

Clearwater-based Brookline Cos. paid $4.9 million for the Sea Shell Motel at 82 Ninth Street South in Naples.

The Naples Daily News reported that the motel closed suddenly after it changed hands. But how Brookline might redevelop the property is unclear.

The 30-room Sea Shell Motel was among several hotels that opened in 1944 on U.S. Highway 41.

Brookline apparently is bullish on Naples.

According to the Naples Daily News, the Clearwater company started buying Naples real estate in 2016 and has spent more than $31 million on property on or around Fifth Avenue South that it plans to redevelop. [Naples Daily News]Mike Seemuth
