Palm Beach mansion across from Ken Griffin’s assemblage sells for $40M

Hildegarde Mahoney, a longtime Palm Beach resident and author, sold her waterfront mansion across from billionaire Ken Griffin’s assemblage for $40 million.

Mahoney, known as “Hillie,” lived at the home at 1296 South Ocean Boulevard with her late husband David Mahoney, who died in 2000. David, a businessman, was president of Canada Dry and later Norton Simon, the company that owned Canada Dry, Hunts Food and Industries, and the McCall Corp. In 2016, Hillie published her memoir “Journey Interrupted: A Family Without a Country in a World at War” about her wartime exile in Japan in the 1940s.

Hillie Mahoney transferred ownership of the property to Merrill Mahoney Trust LLC, a Delaware company that was created in early March.

The 12,358-square-foot mansion was developed in 1992 on a 3.2-acre lot. Records show the land last sold in 1988 for $1.7 million. It includes a pool that fronts the Intracoastal Waterway.

The property is across South Ocean Boulevard from Griffin’s assemblage. Griffin, founder and CEO of the Chicago-based Citadel hedge fund, paid $99 million in September for Frank McCourt’s former home at 60 Blossom Way.

Griffin has spent at least $350 million on homes along Blossom Way and nearby on South Ocean Boulevard.

The ultra-luxury home market in Palm Beach has been especially strong over the past year, with two deals closing in 2019 for more than $100 million, each.
