The Real Deal’s reporting shines bright in the Sunshine State.
Last week the South Florida Society of Professional Journalists announced its annual winners, including four awards to stories from TRD.
In the magazine profiles category, reporter Francisco Alvarado won first place for his cover story on Grant Cardone.
Cardone, a sales coach and marketing guru with a cult-like following, has built an empire of multifamily real estate throughout the Sun Belt. And he’s done it largely with other people’s money, crowdfunding the capital for projects like his 346-unit development on the Miami River and his 2021 purchase of a $744 million four-property portfolio in Broward.
Also under the magazines category, senior reporter and residential bureau chief Katherine Kallergis won second place in the trend reporting category for her story on the wild demand for homes in 2022 — and equally crazy lengths buyers went to in pursuit of South Florida properties.
Under the digital category, data journalist Adam Farence and reporter Lidia Dinkova snagged first place in the Infographics & Data Visualization category for their series “Mapping the South Florida Real Estate Boom.”
Across four research-driven stories, Farence and Dinkova painted a clear picture of the South Florida market and its drivers, from Ken Griffin’s shopping spree to Steve Ross’ South Florida conquests. The series highlights the supertall boom as well as the surge in office development on Miami Beach, creating the most comprehensive visualization of the real estate pipeline in one of the nation’s hottest real estate markets.
Plus, Kallergis’ Weekly Dirt newsletter scooped up a second place win in the newsletter category. In the weekly column, Kallergis breaks down South Florida’s most pressing trends, using her expertise to cover political sagas, development plans and brokerage dramas alike. If it’s not on your reading list every Sunday, you’re missing out — make sure to sign up.
Congratulations to our team of reporters, and thanks to all of our readers for helping us make it happen. Stay tuned for more great coverage!
