In the latest roundup of South Florida luxury real estate deals, a billionaire dynasty, a real estate mogul and a financier sold homes across the tri-county region.
Deals spanned Miami Beach to Jupiter, with prices ranging from $7.7 million to $13.4 million.
Jupiter
Heirs to the Johnson & Johnson fortune sold a mansion in Jupiter’s Bear’s Club for $13.4 million.
Records show Jaime Johnson, Elizabeth Wood Johnson and Alan Frey sold the house at 124 Bear’s Club Drive to Melissa Simmons. Mark Griffin of Bear’s Club Sotheby’s International Realty represented both sides of the deal.
Simmons is the wife of longtime pharma executive David Simmons, chairman and CEO of Wilmington, North Carolina-based Thermo Fisher Scientific subsidiary PPD. The couple also have a namesake charitable foundation through which they donate millions of dollars, including more than $700,000 to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide fund in 2022, records show.
Johnson, Johnson and Frey sold the home as representatives of the late Sale Johnson’s estate. Johnson and Johnson are members of the billionaire Johnson family, and descendants of the founders of pharma giant Johnson & Johnson. Forbes pegs the family’s net worth at $16 billion.
Sale Johnson was married to Woody Johnson for more than 30 years before the couple split. She married former football player and sportscaster Ahmad Rashad in 2007, and they split in 2013, according to published reports.
She bought the Bear’s Club estate for $5 million in 2009 while married to Rashad, property records show. The 10,200-square-foot home was built in 2002 on 2 acres, and includes four bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, a gym and a pool, the listing and records show.
Johnson’s estate listed the house for $16 million last year, Redfin shows.
Boca Raton
In Boca Raton, FMSBonds founder and University of Miami booster Jimmy Klotz sold a One Thousand Ocean condo for $7.7 million.
Klotz’s Jak Boca LLC, a Florida entity, sold unit 301 in the waterfront building at 1000 South Ocean Boulevard to Robert Kurens and Naomi Weidman, according to property records. Senada Adžem of Douglas Elliman represented both sides of the deal.
Klotz is the founder, president and CEO of FMSBonds, a Boca Raton-based financial services firm specializing in the municipal bond market, according to LinkedIn. He is also a major booster of University of Miami athletics, and has donated millions of dollars to support those programs, according to published reports.
Klotz bought the One Thousand Ocean condo for $6 million in 2015, records show. The 4,900-square-foot unit has three bedrooms, four bathrooms and one half-bathroom. The seven-story, 52-unit building also has a gym, pool, spa and sauna, its website shows. Developer LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotel finished construction of the building in 2010.
The unit hit the market for $12.9 million in July of last year, and Klotz dropped the price three times before finding a buyer, according to Realtor.com.
Miami Beach
In Miami Beach, real estate investor Debbie Kalimian sold her 57 Ocean waterfront condo for $12 million.
Records show Kalimian sold unit 1203 at 5775 Collins Avenue to Ocean Mar Declaration of Trust, with attorney Vincent Marriott III signing on behalf of the buyer. The true buyer is unknown.
Dan Hechtkopf and Marci Declaris with Douglas Elliman had the listing, and Ivan Chorney of Compass brought the buyer.
Kalimian is a member of the New York City Kalimian real estate family, whose firm A&R Kalimian is helmed by her brother Albert Kalimian. A&R Kalimian sold a luxury residential tower in Manhattan for $265 million in February after allegedly defaulting on a nine-figure mortgage. In 2022, the siblings’s nephew and sister sued them over management of three properties in New York.
Debbie Kalimian bought the 57 Ocean condo for $8.7 million in 2021, the year the building was completed, property records show. The 3,300-square-foot unit has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and one half-bathroom. The 18-story, 69-unit oceanfront building also includes a gym, pool, club room, spa facilities, and library.
Kalimian listed the condo for $15.3 million in November, and dropped the price three times before closing for $12 million, Redfin shows.
