Doral City Council members voted unanimously in favor of the Trump Organization’s plan to develop up to 1,500 luxury condos on the Trump National Doral Miami property.
The council passed a site plan, rezoning and development agreement for the phased project on Wednesday evening. The second reading vote came five months after the council granted initial approval.
Eric Trump, executive vice president of Trump Org. and son of President-elect Donald Trump, sat in the city council’s chambers but did not speak publicly.
Trump Endeavor 12, an affiliate of Trump’s firm, plans to build 1,498 condos and about 142,000 square feet of commercial space. Pascual, Pérez, Kiliddjian, Starr Architects + Planners designed the plans for Trump International Towers. Four of the buildings would be 20 stories tall. Trump’s attorney, Felix Lasarte, said at the meeting that the project had secured approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The company received a rezoning to downtown mixed-use for 56.4 acres of the property at 4400 Northwest 87th Avenue in Doral. The phased project would not be built on the golf course or resort portion of Trump National, but on the southeast portion of the property that consists of parking lots. Doral Mayor Christi Fraga asked Lasarte to confirm that the golf course would not be affected.
“Many thought maybe the golf courses were impacted, so I just wanted to make sure it was on the record that the golf courses are not being impacted through this development,” Fraga said. Though she voted against the rezoning in August, she voted in favor of it on second reading.
The latest plan marks fewer condos than the 2,300 proposed by the developer in 2022. Trump bought the 600-plus-acre property, home to the resort and the famed Blue Monster golf course, out of bankruptcy for $150 million in 2012. He said his firm spent $250 million in renovations.
Lasarte said last year that the project could be built in five phases, with about 300 luxury condos in each phase. About 20 three-story or four-story townhouses could be built fronting the golf course.
The project will mark the first Trump-branded residential project that the Trump Organization builds in South Florida. The developer has previously licensed its name to other buildings. In 2001, Trump inked a licensing deal with developers Michael and Gil Dezer for the Trump Grande and Trump Towers in Sunny Isles Beach.
