PB County Commission to hear case for development on agricultural reserve

The Palm Beach County Commission will review opposing plans for the Agricultural Reserve today, the Sun-Sentinel reported, though a final decision may be months away.

Though county voters approved spending $100 million to buy 2,500 acres of land and reserve it for farmland, residents living west of Boynton Beach and Delray Beach near the reserve want to build charter schools on the vast property. They say there aren’t enough educational facilities to meet the demand of their growing population.

The reserve is actually comprised of more than 20,000 acres of land, and developers can build on land not purchased by the county provided they obtain county approval and set aside 60 percent of their property for agricultural uses, conservation or water storage. Residents want the schools to be built on some of the land that was preserved as a trade-off for new development. [Sun-Sentinel]
