More casinos could be coming to South Florida

New legislation on the table next week could pave the way for developers to open casinos in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Senator Garrett Richter from Naples has proposed that a commission, to be called the Department of Gaming Control, regulate gambling in South Florida — and that citizens have the deciding vote on casino-related issues.

The world’s largest gambling company, Las Vegas Sands, and another big name in the industry, Genting Malaysia Berhad, have both pushed for a change in legislation that would allow the construction of casinos, the Sun-Sentinel reported. Richter will need to appeal to the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which has exclusive rights to blackjack and other tables, in order to allow more casinos on the scene. [Sun Sentinel]  — Angela Hunt
