The former mayor of Miami Beach is in the midst of litigation with his daughter over who is the rightful owner of a home in the city.

Alex Daoud, who served as Miami Beach’s mayor from 1985 to 1991 and later served 18 months in federal prison for tax evasion, accepting bribes and obstruction of justice, was sued in 2012 by daughter Kelly Hyman over a house in the 1700 block of Michigan Avenue. Hyman claims she formed the corporation that owns the property and filed the Miami-Dade Circuit Court complaint to enforce her ownership of the home, which was purchased for $1 million in 2006. An attorney for Daoud, 71, claims his client is the only one to cover mortgage, insurance and other costs.

Daoud told the Miami Herald that getting sued by his daughter was “about as close to death as I came.” He lives in the house with his dog and claims he would have no other options if Hyman is victorious in the case.

Hyman disputed that notion, telling the Herald her father “has the financial means” to find a comparable living arrangement. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
