Miami Beach to analyze MacArthur traffic for Flagstone project

Miami Beach residents spoke out against the controversial Flagstone Island Gardens project — a mix of luxury hotel, upscale shops and a yacht marina on Watson Island — at a Miami Beach commission meeting Wednesday. 

Commissioners agreed to spend about $200,000 on a traffic study to analyze the impact of a long-awaited project by Turkish developer Mehmet Bayraktar after residents raised concerns about potential traffic problems on the MacArthur Causeway by the Flagstone project, saying the traffic could gridlock the causeway and hurt tourism, the Miami Herald reported.

Another complaint from Miami Beach residents stems from a series of changes Flagstone has made to its plans, including a recent revision that includesa 60 percent increase in parking and an additional 140,000-square-feet of restaurant and retail space.

“It’s premature in the fact that we have not started the review of the modifications,” Cesar Garcia-Pons, deputy planning director for Miami, told the Herald, adding that the application is not complete yet. [Miami Herald] — Kristina Puga
