The paved path that runs underneath the Metrorail, from Brickell to Dadeland, might finally be transformed into Miami-Dade’s equivalent of the High Line in New York.

Friends of the Underline is the group behind the campaign to redevelop the M-Path into the Underline, a landscaped, 10-mile long bikeway and park, the Miami Herald reported.

With backing from the University of Miami, the county and the cities of Miami, Coral Gables and South Miami, the group launched a competition for a design firm to develop a master plan and two demonstration projects centered on Metrorail stations, according to the Herald.

The three cities, along with the Knight Foundation, the Miami Foundation and others with fund the $500,000 contract for the design. Friends of the Underline will announce the winner Feb. 2 and will have a plan ready by July. [Miami Herald]Katherine Kallergis
