A historic farmhouse in Palisades, New York, with ties to the Revolutionary War era, which also served as home to famous contemporary actors and artists, hit the market for $5 million.

The farmhouse — at 35 Washington Spring Road which was built around 1750 by John Sneden and is situated on land stretching from Rockland County, New York, into Bergen County, New Jersey — witnessed pivotal moments in history, NorthJersey.com reported

In 1776, during an assault on Fort Lee, 500 patriots gathered near the property to force British forces into landing along the Palisades’ cliffs. Gen. George Washington later had a blockhouse built nearby to oversee the river and protect the ferry dock, frequented by the likes of Benedict Arnold.

Over the years, the farmhouse underwent expansions and renovations by subsequent owners. The oldest part of the house, featuring exposed sandstone blocks, dates back to its original construction. Mary Watson, who purchased the property in 1859, added the largest section and tallest roofline. Later, Lydia Lawrence converted the house into the town’s inaugural public library, the outlet reported.

The 3,200-square-foot interior is composed of three ensuite bedrooms, three living rooms, four bathrooms, and an English kitchen. Original features such as pine floors, working fireplaces, panel doors, and hand-hewn beams have been preserved.

The house comes fully furnished with antique pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. The rear porch gives residents views of the Hudson River, complemented by landscaping and an  in-ground pool.

Sculptor Alexander Phimister Proctor, composer Aaron Copland, and actors Margot Kidder, Uma Thurman, and Ethan Hawke all called 35 Washington Spring Road home in recent years, according to the outlet.

Richard Ellis of Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.
