After having a life sentence overturned, a woman struck a plea agreement for her role in the murder of a Minnesota real estate agent.

A judge instead sentenced Elsa Segura to 20 years in prison, the Associated Press reported. Segura pleaded guilty to kidnapping to commit great bodily harm or terrorize the victim Monique Baugh.

Segura initially received a life sentence after being found guilty of murder in 2021. This year, however, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the conviction over faulty jury instructions. Segura was facing the potential of a second trial before the plea agreement.

A public defender for Segura did not return a request for comment from the AP.

Baugh’s family blasted the plea deal.

“She sits in there, and she figured out how to get shorter time,” the victim’s aunt told a local Fox affiliate. “She should feel that for the rest of her life. Her family should feel it for the rest of her life.”

Prosecutors claimed Segura lured Baugh, who was a sales associate for Kris Lindahl Real Estate, to a fake home showing in the Maple Grove suburb, leading to her murder on New Year’s Eve 2019. Baugh’s boyfriend was also shot, but survived.

Berry Alexander Davis and Cedric Lamont Berry were also convicted of murder in 2021, as well as other charges, and were given life sentences without parole. The state supreme court affirmed their convictions. They also received concurrent sentences of 13 years for kidnapping and 20 years for attempted murder, respectively, which will technically be served ahead of their life sentences.

Lyndon Wiggins, the alleged mastermind behind the plot who was said to be motivated after a falling out with Baugh’s boyfriend, also had his conviction overturned. But he is being held in the county jail and still faces retrial.

Baugh’s shocking murder was a flashpoint for the real estate industry, forcing companies to review security practices and reckon with the rare, but frightening violent incidents that can take place in the brokerage world.
