Judges at the annual National Association of Real Estate Editors bestowed The Real Deal with top marks, describing the magazine as a “must-read, full of stories about larger-than-life characters.”
Leading national news publications gathered in Miami this week evening to look back at the last year of real estate journalism. TRD brought home 11 awards in total, including gold medals for Best Website, Best Residential Real Estate Magazine and Best Commercial Real Estate Magazine.
TRD writers and editors were called out for their specific work. Reporter Jake Indursky’s coverage of Opendoor and its CEO Kaz Netajian earned the top prize for Best Residential Real Estate Trade or B-to-B Magazine Story, with judges complimenting Indursky for pulling off the difficult task of successfully writing an inside story about a subject and company reluctant to talk.
Texas bureau chief Jess Hardin was awarded the same category’s silver medal for her profile of Mehrdad Moayedi. “Hardin raises thought-provoking questions about what matters most,” the judges said in their comments. Senior reporter Kathryn Brenzel received an honorable mention in the category for her profile of HUD Secretary Scott Turner.
Senior reporter Rich Bockmann took home the gold for Best Commercial Real Estate Trade or B-to-B Magazine Story for his profile of real estate attorney Leo Jacobs. Judges praised Bockmann’s attention to detail and expert ability to craft a narrative. Senior editor Keith Larsen nabbed an honorable mention for his feature trying to track down Moshe Silber’s money trail.
TRD’s South Florida staff, including bureau chief Katherine Kallergis and reporters Lidia Dinkova, Francisco Alvarado and Kate Hinsche, won the Best Team Report bronze medal for their coverage of Steve Roth in the state, and reporters Kari Hamanaka and Suzannah Cavanaugh got an honorable mention for their feature on how Los Angeles is rebuilding post-Pacific Palisades fire.
Reporter Francisco Alvarado and video producer Nicole Guillen won bronze for Best Multi-Platform Package or Series for their joint video-text series about Adam Neumann in Florida.
