Ideas for the redevelopment of Governors Island in New York Harbor must be submitted to the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation by late Monday afternoon. The group is expecting hundreds of ideas about what to build on the 172-acre island that was ceded back to the city and the state by the federal government for $1 in 2003. (The National Park Service already controls 22 of those acres through the Governors Island National Monument.) The federal government had since the 19th century used the island as a military base, and now it could be the site of everything from a reproduction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater to a high school, according to some of the ideas already submitted. more [Sun]
