Wal-Mart tries for city toehold in Staten Island

Having lost a chance in Queens, Wal-Mart is making a play for Staten Island. The retail behemoth, which has no locations in New York City, recently took out ads on local radio and in 70 community newspapers touting the benefits of a Wal-Mart in Staten Island. No word yet on possible locations for a Wal-Mart in the least populous borough. After residents vociferously objected, the retailer was last winter rejected by the developer of a new mall in Rego Park, Queens. more [NYT]
