Jamaica Bay island eyed for makeover

A porta-pottie magnate wants to re-develop Broad Channel Island in Jamaica Bay. The 1-mile-long island is home to about 3,000 Queens residents, among them Charles Howard, president of Call-A-Head Portable Toilets and owner of 20 properties on Broad Channel. Howard wants to turn those properties into doctors’ offices, a pharmacy, a year-round Christmas store, a hotel, and a cafeacute; all on an island that doesn’t have a sit-down restaurant or a movie theater. more [NYT]
