Authority proposes fees to stem shortfall

The New York City Housing Authority, the landlord to more than 400,000 poorer New Yorkers, is proposing charging tenants for certain services to help close a $168 million budget shortfall. The authority has proposed charging tenants, for instance, $5.75 a month to run a washing machine and $5 a month to operate a dishwasher. Parking fees will rise on April 1 to $75 from $5 a year. more [NYT]
