Whitney expansion a while off

The Whitney Museum of American Art’s bold plan to expand into a 200,000 square-foot space in the Meatpacking District has only taken the first steps in its journey of 1,000 miles through the city’s permit process. Museum officials announced recently that they have entered into a conditional agreement to purchase land on the West Side at Washington and West streets along the elevated High Line park, which is currently under construction. A museum spokesperson said that the museum will not “break ground for a while” as the expansion plan awaits approval from a slew of community groups and city and state agencies. more [NYP]
