SI welcomes development lull

Staten Island is no longer the city’s fastest-growing borough following a sharp drop in new development over the past year. The borough was almost wholly responsible for 2006’s 10 percent dip in building permits citywide; the slowdown is mostly attributed to rezoning and the end of a tax-abatement program. Residents are welcoming the less-frenzied pace of construction. Local broker Jeff Gallo said, “There’s a feeling out in Staten Island now that you just can’t get away with everything.” more [NYT]
