Whole Foods Market will open a store on Houston between Chrystie and Bowery at the end of the month, the first of four branches the chain will open in the city over the next couple years. The other three stores will be located in Tribeca, Gowanus and on the Upper West Side. Many community members and real estate experts say the opening of the Lower East Side store not only distances the Bowery from its seedy past but proves that it is more than a stomping ground for recent college grads. “It signifies that the neighborhood has become a more longer-term residential area,” said City Council Member Alan Gerson. “It shows that the stratosphere has changed beyond the young, bohemian crews just getting started out.” more [Sun]
