An audit conducted by the state comptroller found that the Empire State Development Corporation and the Department of Economic Development provided funds to the Suffolk-Nassau Chamber of Commerce that were inappropriately used. The audit comes on the heels of questions raised about funding the Chamber of Commerce provided to the nephew of former ESDC chief Charles Gargano. The issue of the audit to the agencies, which seeks restitution of $125,000 by this Thursday, was made public today by the office of state comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. DiNapoli had been investigating grants provided by the ESDC and the DED to the Long Island-based Chamber of Commerce. more By Jen Benepe
