Coney Island’s Astroland held opening ceremonies for its last season yesterday. The park will shutter at the end of the summer. Most of the amusement park will be razed to make way for Thor Equities’ new commercial/condo development, but the Cyclone roller coaster will be preserved. “[Astroland has] contributed so much to family life for Brooklynites and for all New Yorkers and beyond since the early 1960’s, and we’re going to miss them,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “But there’s going to be a new Coney Island; that’s the promise.” more [NY1]
