The City Council will hold a public hearing tomorrow about the Economic Development Corporation’s plans to seize a series of Downtown Brooklyn buildings via eminent domain. According to historians, the mid-19th century buildings in question are almost irrefutably believed to have significant ties to the Underground Railroad. The EDC hired consultants who examined the buildings’ histories and said that although they appeared to have played a part in the Underground Railroad, they were not worth preserving. The EDC intends to build an underground parking lot on the site of the current Duffield Street buildings. Critics of the agency’s plans will lobby the Council to prevent the buildings’ seizure and destruction. TRD
