United Palace, the former Loews Wonder Theater at 175th Street and Broadway, is positioning itself as one of the city’s major indie rock venues. The recently renovated 3,293-seat auditorium will soon host shows by Bjork and the Arcade Fire. Loews closed the Washington Heights theater in 1969, at which time it was purchased by televangelist Rev. Ike for $600,000. Until now, the space has been used intermittently for a variety of different types of performers, but its new bookers are bringing in acts usually associated with downtown Manhattan’s music scene. The theater’s architectural style has been described as “Byzantine-Romanesque-Indo-Hindu-Sino- Moorish-Persian-Eclectic-Rococo-Deco.” more [Times Select]
