Bono sparks San Remo battle

U2’s Bono was recently involved in a heated dispute concerning the Upper West Side’s storied co-op the San Remo. The building, at 74th Street and Central Park West, banned the use of fireplaces last year, in part because smoke from some tenants’ units was entering Bono’s penthouse duplex. Bono lodged a complaint with the building, saying the fireplace smoke was potentially harmful to his family. The decision to disallow the use of fireplace angered some of the building’s other owners, who said the wafting fumes were not necessarily harmful. Most San Remo residents, however, have little sympathy for the pro-fireplace faction. “If people want fireplaces, let them go live in the country,” said Mitch Miller, who lives in the building and was the host of the 1960s television program “Sing Along with Mitch.” more [NYT]
