Schnabel building in the pink

The netting around Julian Schnabel’s 17-story residential project in the Far West Village has come down, and the building’s hot-pink exterior is upsetting some neighborhood preservationists. The tower, at 360 West 11th Street, has been mired in controversy since Schnabel secured a permit from the Department of Buildings. The building went up despite lobbying against the project by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. The group objected to the project because the building was higher than pending rezoning would have allowed. Andrew Berman, director of the G.V.S.H.P., contends that Schnabel foisted the garish pink exterior on the neighborhood as a punishment. Schnabel hasn’t commented. more [Villager]
