The Rockefeller Foundation is inaugurating the Jane Jacobs Medals to “recognize visionary work in building a more diverse, dynamic and equitable city through creative uses of the urban environment.” The first two medals, which each come with a $100,000 prize, will go to Greenmarket founder Barry Benepe and Omar Freilla, the founder of the Bronx’s Green Worker Cooperatives. The awards will be presented as part of the opening of the Municipal Arts Society’s “Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York” exhibit this September. more [NYT]
