Panel votes to preserve Hotel Pennsylvania

The landmarks committee of Manhattan‘s Community Board 5 has voted six-to-one in favor of designating Hotel Pennsylvania an official city landmark. If the proposal is approved by the full board November 8 and later passed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Vornado’s plans to tear down the 22-story inn to make way for a giant office tower — possibly for Merrill Lynch’s new headquarters — could be in jeopardy. It could also interfere with plans to redevelop the nearby Farley Post Office.
