New York Islanders owner Charles Wang and his Lighthouse Development Group want to build a giant mixed-use development at the site of Nassau Coliseum, but Hempstead officials worry that the mega-complex will worsen traffic and parking problems. Plans call for a new Coliseum for 17,500 fans, 250,000 square feet of convention, conference and exhibition space, two 31-story hotel-condominiums and more. The developer has committed $55 million toward roadway improvements, but its planned 17,211 parking spaces do not comply with Hempstead’s building code.
