The U.S. Treasury Department and a coalition of mortgage industry companies are negotiating a plan that would freeze the interest rates of many subprime loans posed to reset. The coalition, called the Hope Now Alliance, includes Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual and Countrywide Financial. Over two million mortgages are set to jump to higher rates in the next two years.
