Clinton renews New York green building agenda

The Clinton Climate Initiative will announce a new collaboration with the nonprofit housing group Enterprise at a gala event this evening, ramping up its campaign of “greening” low-income housing.

Former President Bill Clinton has pushed his nationwide environmental agenda since spring, when he announced his $5 billion program to renovate municipal buildings in major cities worldwide.

Clinton also planned to retrofit his own building in Harlem – but whether that has actually happened isn’t clear. Executives at his organization were not immediately available to explain that project’s status.

CCI and Enterprise will solicit government officials, foundations and financial institutions to contribute to a $30 million Green Fund. The fund will be used to build and preserve 15,000 eco-friendly and affordable homes statewide. Enterprise says it has “greened” over 3,000 affordable homes in New York state, with the majority in New York City.

Ira Magaziner, the Clinton Climate Initiative’s chairman and Clinton’s former policy advisor, will be on hand tonight for the formal announcement of the collaboration between CCI and Enterprise at Gotham City Gala, Enterprise’s annual fundraising dinner.
 
Tonight’s gala will also honor New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his sustainable development efforts.
