Newark Mayor Cory Booker filed lawsuits against five developers
yesterday, in an effort to reclaim municipal lots that the previous
administration had sold to them at discounted prices. City officials
have accused the builders of not developing the land within the time
specified by the deals’ contracts. The lawsuit is expected to be the
first of several to target some of the 31 companies that purchased land
from former Mayor Sharpe James at prices of $1 to $4 per square foot,
when comparable market-rate lots were valued at about $25 per square
foot.
