Battles over conversions rage on

As The Real Deal
reports in this month’s issue, developers face long battles with
tenants as they convert rental buildings to condominiums, and the pace
of conversions has fallen off. But renters still have reason to worry.
A new burst of conversions could be in the works as developers fear a
Democratic takeover of the state Senate this fall, which would give
Democrats control of both houses of the Legislature. Some building
owners say Democrats would give tenants more bargaining power or
toughen protections for them in conversions.
