Merrill Lynch has posted a $9.8 billion fourth-quarter loss, the biggest in its history. The firm, which has been hit hard by the subprime mortgage meltdown, recorded more than $14 billion in write-downs, much of it tied to subprime losses. In the third quarter, Merrill recorded $7.9 billion in write-downs.
