While New York University says it wants to preserve the character of
Greenwich Village as it expands, some residents are skeptical. NYU
discussed its plans for adding 6 million square feet of space
yesterday, half of which could be built at its Washington Square
campus. The university says it will focus on reusing existing buildings
and fill in gaps near Washington Square. “These people are trained to
make us feel like NYU is friendly,” said long-time resident Naomi
Saltzman. “We know better. They’ve broken every promise they’ve ever made.”
NYU wants to build on Governors Island, as The Real Deal
reported, and could also expand on the East Side near its hospital and
in Downtown Brooklyn. A possible Long Island City campus has been
scrapped.
