These are dark days for newspapers, but at least one of the industry’s top figures will be able escape to the luxurious confines of 15 Central Park West. George B. Irish, president of Hearst Newspapers and a senior vice president of Hearst Corporation, has purchased a condo at 15 Central Park West for $5.77 million, according to public records. Irish, who closed on unit 10K on Dec. 20, serves on the boards of the Associated Press and the Newspaper Association of America. A jewel in the Hearst newspaper chain, the San Francisco Chronicle, lost $330 million between mid-2000 and September, 2006, or $1 million a week, according to a Hearst Newspapers official. Hearst announced last year that it would cut 25 percent of newsroom jobs at the Chronicle. TRD
