The city’s redevelopment plan for Coney Island might call for preserving the amusement park, but not a famous eatery that dates back to 1916. The plan would allow towers at least 14 stories high to be built at the original two-story Nathan’s Famous hot dog restaurant at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues. “Nathan’s would be given more opportunities for development on its property, which could lead to any one of a number of scenarios, including the expansion of Nathan’s or its redevelopment as a new building,” City Planning spokeswoman Rachaele Raynoff said. The new towers could be “entertainment-related, retail, amusement or hotel use,” she said. Nathan’s could build on top of its existing building, demolish it or move elsewhere in the neighborhood.
