The Landmarks Preservation Commission has voted to designate the Bronx’s old American Bank Note Company
Printing Plant a landmark. The complex on the Bruckner Expressway in Hunts Point was built in 1911. “The
plant is notable not only for its commanding presence in the neighborhood and
from other vantage points in the
also for the sweep of multi-story arcades across the front facade and its
nine-story medieval-style tower,” said Commission Chairman Robert Tierney.
Last month, a joint venture led by Taconic Investment Partners paid $32
million, or about $70 per square foot, for the three-building complex. Plans
call for transforming it into an arts-oriented center for nonprofits with a
local food market. Along with offices, space will be created for art storage
and private galleries. Foreign currency, stock certificates and stamps were
printed at the plant until 1985. TRD
