Several would-be renters were duped by a bogus ad posted on Craigslist for a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, that supposedly cost $950 per month instead of the market-rate $2,200. The ad for the apartment at 8235 Fourth Avenue said the tenant had a sudden job transfer and the renter had to take the apartment sight unseen and send a $550 security deposit. Internet fraud and security expert Craig Solomon said, “It is becoming more common because New York apartments have become such a hot commodity. People are so desperate that they aren’t always thinking clearly.”
