Some good news in upstate’s struggling Rust Belt: Syracuse has the second-lowest foreclosure rate in RealtyTrac’s rankings of the nation’s 100 biggest metro areas. With only .13 percent of households in some stage of foreclosure, Syracuse ranked behind only Greenville, S.C. Detroit, Stockton, Calif., and Las Vegas had the nation’s highest foreclosure rates. Experts say the markets with the most foreclosures had experienced rapid growth and unsustainable price appreciation, or were hit with a widespread economic downturn. Florida had two cities in the top 10, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Nationwide, foreclosure filings went up 75 percent last year.
