Javits Center debate delays Hudson River Park

The opening of the Tribeca and Chelsea sections of the Hudson
River
Park could be
delayed by more than a year because funding had been tied to the controversial sale
of land near the Javits
Center
. Last week,
following opposition by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker
Christine Quinn, Gov. Eliot Spitzer decided to hold off on selling the parcel
of land north of the convention center. That leaves open a possible future
expansion, but drained $40 million from the Hudson River Park
project. Spitzer has also promised to take proceeds from selling land south of
Javits to fund the park, which has not drawn opposition.
