The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it will build something substantial on the big dirt pit above the Fulton Street Transit Center, though it won’t be the glass-domed structure that was shelved last month because it was too expensive. The station, which will house 12 transit lines, will cost about $1.19 billion. The MTA, which used eminent domain to clear 140 Businesses On Broadway to make way for the station, says it will add retail to the building, but some are skeptical. “They say, ‘Retail, retail, retail,’ but they already ruined the retail life in the area,” said William Saad, a tailor displaced by the project. “Will that house any small businessman who operates by himself? I don’t think so.”
