Residents of several East 51st Street buildings are being allowed to return to their homes, following an evacuation after Saturday’s high-rise crane collapse killed seven people, destroyed a townhouse and damaged several buildings. The city’s Department of Buildings re-opened 314, 318, 320, 322 and 324 East 51st Street and is expected to lift evacuation orders at two other buildings later Tuesday. Six construction workers and a woman visiting for St. Patrick’s Day were killed Saturday. Buildings Department Commissioner Patricia Lancaster said reports of a failed nylon strap have not been confirmed. East 50th and 51st streets between First and Second avenues remain closed to traffic.
